Help, I'm stressed!
I was asked to speak on the radio yesterday.....about stress. The local radio station was doing a piece called 'Help, I'm stressed!' and wanted me, and fellow life coach, Suzie Cousins, to present a quiz on air for listeners to discover their levels of stress.
It was all great fun - made more so by the fact that we were joined by an excellent singer and musician, Paul Robinson, 'Robbo', playing some soothing backing music while we spoke (!) and giving a brilliant rendition of Elton John's 'Rocket Man'.
The whole event was very musical and we ended up listening to Abba's 'Dancing Queen', a record chosen by Suzie, with all of us singing or dancing in the studio, as an example of how to de-stress...and it certainly worked.
Anyway, back to the quiz...
Suzie and I had devised a very brief quiz, based on research about the signs and symptoms of stress, to assess stress levels. Not a very scientific test perhaps, due to its brevity, but a fairly good indication nevertheless of a person's current stress.
Paul, along with Francis Finn, the show's presenter, both had a go at the quiz, and both turned out to be moderately stressed. Actually, this was no bad thing. Some stress is important, particularly when a person is 'performing' because it can lead to achieving the best performance possible. What is damaging is when stress levels are too high or continue at a moderate to high level for extended periods of time. Hopefully, both Paul and Francis' stress levels returned to near normal after the show!
The rest of our time on radio was spent talking about how to deal with stress - reducing as far as possible the demands on us, and increasing our ability to cope with stress.
All too soon, the slot was over. But you can access some of the things we covered in two ways:
Check your own stress levels with a quick quiz from the BBC here.
And, if you do suffer from stress, join Suzie and I on our Managing Your Stress workshop in Nottingham this 17 September where we'll be sharing tips on how to manage your stress. Find out more or bag your place here or ring me on 0115 252 2552 or Suzie on 01636 626332.
Hope to see you there!
